As a nurse practitioner, caregiver, and a traveler on this journey we call life, I have witnessed the transformative power of music in supporting and strengthening mental health. Music has the unique ability to touch our souls, evoke emotions, and transport us to different worlds. The Rhythms of Heritage: Growing Up with Haitian Beats

Growing up in a Haitian home with loving religious parents, I was surrounded by uplifting Christian music sprinkled in with some Jackson 5, Milli Vanilli and Michael Bolton. Some of my most outstanding memories when visiting relatives were there vastly different choices of music which would seemingly command them to start dancing to the rhythm of the drums during carnival season and listening to the energetic beats of Rara music. Rara, a traditional Haitian music that originated during the colonial era, was used as a form of resistance against oppression. It is characterized by its use of percussion instruments, horns, and call-and-response vocals, serving not only as a form of entertainment but also as a means of social and cultural expression. This vibrant music brings people together, creating a sense of community and belonging, echoing through funerals, weddings, and other significant life events.
